A car driver and and a lone pedestrian could have vital information for detectives probing an arson attack which killed an elderly Wakefield pensioner.
Police have stressed the white Peugeot hatchback seen travelling along Walton Lane - towards Barnsley Road at Sandal and the man walking in the same direction - have not been linked to the fire at the nearby Sandal Grange Farm,Sandal. in which 81-year-old Lea Brooke died on Monday November 10.

But they believe the driver, any other occupants of the Peugeot which was seen to turn from Walton Lane into Ashdale - a cul-de-sac - and the walker could have seen something or someone of vital importance to the investigation.

Cameras fitted on West Yorkshire Fire Service appliances attending the blaze filmed both the car and the walking man at 1.44that morning.

Senior Investigating Officer Det Supt Dave Pervin, of West Yorkshire Police's Homicide and Major Enquiry Team, said: "The car and the man were filmed by cameras fitted to the fire service appliances responding to the fire.

We are not saying that these two people have anything to do with the fire, but they may have vital information which could help our inquiry. Obviously at this time of night not many people are out and about so I would like to identify the driver of this car and the walker to see if they can help us in any way.

"They cannot have failed to see the activity and sirens in the area at the time, " he said."Mrs Brooke and her family were respected and well liked members of the local community. Did someone have a grudge against them or in fact were the wrong premises targeted. We are trying to find out why someone would want to harm them,"added Det Supt Pervin.

The occupant(s) of the car, the man walking along Walton Lane or anyone with information is asked to call West Yorkshire Police on 0845 6060606.reference HMET Sandal Fire, SIO Det Supt Pervin or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
