The Whites were outplayed by the hosts at a sold-out St James' Park.
Jamaal Lascelles put Rafa Benitez' side ahead before goalkeeper Rob Green was forced into a number of saves to keep the score down.
Newcastle had 19 corners and 22 shots at goal over the course of the match but failed to add to the scoreline in a dominant display.

The point left Leeds in fourth place in the race for promotion and three points clear of seventh-placed Fulham with four games remaining.
Monk said post-match: "We showed what a spirit we have, the determination not to give up until the end and that is what brought the goal.
"We got the point that we are happy with, but I am really proud of the players - they never gave up.

"You need the mentality, the spirit but also the quality and we were able to show that quality in that single moment, which was important and sometimes that is all it takes."
Leeds went on to miss out on a play-off spot on the final day of the season before Monk departed in the following summer amid the full takeover of Andrea Radrizzani.
