The Met Office report warns of the potential for "some injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces" and "some icy patches on untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths". "Icy surfaces leading to difficult travel conditions in places" was also included in the warning. The warning has been put in place from 4pm on Tuesday until 11am on Wednesday. This week, cold easterly winds will develop, bringing wintry showers, particularly around eastern parts, while hazardous freezing fog, frost and ice risks will all continue, the Met Office added. RAC Breakdown spokesman Simon Williams said: “The message for those who have to drive is to adjust their speed according to the conditions and leave extra stopping distance so 2021 doesn’t begin with an unwelcome bump and an insurance claim. “Snow and ice are by far the toughest driving conditions, so if they can be avoided that’s probably the best policy.” What to do if you have a burst pipe - Met Office advice Sometimes pipes freezing and thawing can cause them to burst. If this happens, turn off the mains water supply immediately by using the stoptap. This will stop any more water getting into the water pipes. If the burst pipe is on the main water system the rush of water will stop after a short while. If the rush of water does not stop or there is still a constant run of water, the problem is probably on the cold water storage system. You will need to drain down the cold water storage tank which is usually located in the roof space. Most importantly, if the worst happens, keep calm, do not panic and if you suspect you have frozen pipes contact your nearest WaterSafe plumber from the UK national accreditation scheme.
