Headingley and Adel police operation sees drivers speed and escape with numerous excuses

Neighbourhood policing officers from north west Leeds have deployed their speed guns in Headingley and Adel after residents raised concerns about speeding.

In Tuesday's operation, officers re-visited Tinshill Lane in LS16 - a 30mph road which has already been speed checked recently.

One moped was caught doing over double the speed limit at 65mph and failed to stop for police, so they are now taking action to trace the driver and deal with them accordingly.

Officers stopped seven other vehicles that were driving over the speed limit - going at speeds ranging from 38mph to 41mph.

Ash Road in Headingley was also monitored in the operation and only one vehicle was seen to be exceeding the 20mph speed limit by driving at 26mph.

Police received a number of reasons from people for why they had exceeded the speed limits which ranged from 'I've just picked my kids up' to questioning, 'is this only a 30?'.

The force warned people that 'road safety and knowing and doing the correct speed on roads could save lives'.

A post on the West Yorkshire Police Leeds North West Facebook page said: "On 09/03/2021 officers from North West inner Neighbourhood police Team deployed the speed gun on Ash Road in Headingley, after residents raised concerns about speeding. Only one vehicle was seen to be exceeding the 20mph limit, at 26mph.

"Officers then re-visited Tinshill Lane, LS16, which has already been speed checked recently. Officers stopped 7 vehicles that were recorded doing from 38 – 41 MPH in a 30 MPH zone.

"One moped, which failed to stop, was recorded at 65 MPH. Action will be taken to trace the driver & deal with them accordingly.

"Reasons for exceeding the speed limit ranged from ‘’I’ve just picked my kids up’’ to ‘’is this only a 30?’’
