A trip to the supermarket was vital for combating isolation in lockdown for 44 per cent of people in Yorkshire, a study has found.

The study showed that for 44 per cent of people in Yorkshire, a weekly shop was a way of fighting with lockdown isolation feelings as one of the only times they could feel a sense of normal.

The chief executive officer and founder of Ubamarket, Will Broome, said: “Localised lockdowns have highlighted exactly how important local shops and supermarkets are to consumers.

“Their presence is absolutely paramount in our efforts to combat the difficulties brought about by the virus and the statistics show that where these people are finding much-needed relief when doing their weekly shop, the centrality of supermarkets has never been clearer.”

Supermarkets will remain open in all tiers, including the Tier 3 ‘Very High’ restricted areas, with face coverings still compulsory for customers, unless exempt, in all supermarkets.

The majority of Asda supermarkets in Leeds are open until between 10pm and 12am each night, with Asda Killingbeck being the only Leeds store to be open 24 hours a day.

Asda have safety marshals stationed at the front of each store and in the aisles of more busy supermarkets to reiterate the face covering rules and remind customers to maintain social distancing.

The marshals also sanitise each basket and trolley handle before giving these to customers, in addition to Asda having applied a protective coating to all basket and trolley handles which creates an antimicrobial surface that limits the spread of bacteria.
